Portsmouth 3 Leyton Orient 1
Paul McCallum’s hat-trick helped Pompey to victory in the Final Third Development League fixture despite a spirited performance from a Orient side which contained the majority of the under-18 side.
Midfielder Lloyd James continued his recovery from injury with 60 minutes in the encounter at Furze Lane, but the O’s fell 2-0 behind thanks to a first-half brace from the West Ham loanee, with one coming from the penalty spot.
Sam Ling pulled one back for Orient in a strong second half showing and after missing chances to level, McCallum sealed the win late on.
The O’s got off to the worst possible start when Wes Fogden was felled in the box by Aron Pollock with only four minutes on the clock.
McCallum coolly slotted the penalty past Ben Card in the O’s goal and the hosts broke the deadlock.
Chances were few and far between in the opening half, but Jack Humphrey’s long ball over the top on to Victor Adeboyejo caused confusion amongst the Pompey ranks, but they managed to remain in front.
The O’s had slowly worked their way back into the game only to fall further behind four minutes before half time when Josh Passley’s mazy run down the right wing resulted in a pin-point ball into the box found McCallum who headed past Card.
That was how it remained at the break, but the O’s enjoyed much more possession and pressure against an experienced Portmouth side which also included Johnny Ertl and Craig Westcarr.
James Granger almost extended Pompey’s lead when his sweetly-struck free-kick struck the outside of the post.
Card denied McCallum with another header before Fogden rounded Card on 57 minutes, only for the O’s to regroup and deflect an effort from Westcarr behind for a corner.
James made way on the hour mark for Nick Brown, and Scott Kashket won a free-kick on the edge of the area soon after. Harry Lee’s effort from the set piece was deflected off the wall and behind for a corner.
And from the resulting set piece, Lee’s delivery was met by Sam Ling and the defender slotted home to give Orient hope.
Chances continued to come the visitors way and Impressive substitute Myles Judd played a crossfield ball for Shola Oladipo, which was missed by the Pompey defence, and when through on goal the winger spurned the opportunity.
Orient fashioned another opening which fell to Kashket and despite a good run into the box, he was unable to supply the finish as he fired just wide of the target.
And any hopes of a late leveller were extinguished when Pompey substitute Calvin Davies’ effort was only parried by Card straight into the path of McCallum who made no mistake from close range to seal the win.
