Leyton Orient U18s produced a commanding display in South Wales as they defeated Newport County 5-1.
Despite falling behind early on, Orient responded strongly and levelled through Scott Kashket before both he and Freddy Moncur scored from the penalty spot to give the O’s a 3-1 lead going into the break. Aron Pollock then claimed his first goal of the season with a well-taken strike before Moncur added a fifth following a fine passing move.
Having suffered their first defeat of the Merit League 2 campaign against Bristol Rovers, Andy Edwards made three changes as Aron Pollock, Montel Agyemang and Nick Brown came in for the suspended pair of Jack Humphrey and Sam Ling while Sam Alderson dropped to the bench.
The O’s started in 4-3-3 formation with Scott Kashket and Shola Oladipo playing either side of Victor Adeboyejo in attack but the team found it difficult early on in wet and windy conditions.
After suffering a poor start to the match Orient then fell behind when a defensive error allowed the Newport County centre-forward to race through and fire beyond Ben Card in the O’s goal.
Orient responded strongly to falling behind however and did not have to wait long for an equaliser as Scott Kashket collected Shola Oladipo’s pass inside the box before firing home from 12-yards.
Having levelled the tie Orient had the chance to take the lead moments later when Victor Adeboyejo won a penalty after being fouled by the Newport goalkeeper. As a result of the challenge Adeboyejo was unable to continue and Christian Owusu replaced the striker.
Following a brief delay, captain Freddy Moncur took responsibility of the spot-kick and calmly fired it beyond the Newport ‘keeper to put Orient ahead.
A second penalty was then awarded to the O’s soon after for an off-the-ball incident and it was Kashket who this time took up penalty duties to extend the visitors advantage and double his tally for the match.
Despite conditions continuing to be tough for both sides, Orient went into the break with a healthy 3-1 advantage thanks to several good saves from Card in the O’s goal.
After the restart the game remained a tight affair and the O’s reverted to a 4-4-2 formation on the hour mark after Sam Alderson came on for Kashket. With Alderson slotting in at right back, Myles Judd moved across to centre back while Aron Pollock joined Owusu up front.
Pollock – who had enjoyed a cameo appearance in attack last week – then showed his versatility as he registered his first goal of the season. Following good work by Oladipo out on the left, Pollock controlled a pass well before convincingly drilling the ball into the corner.
Moncur then sealed the O’s win late on as he applied the finishing touches a brilliant team goal. Having exchanged passes with Pollock and Oladipo, the midfielder raced clear of the Newport defence before rounding the goalkeeper and slotting home his 10th of the season.
The victory makes it five wins out of a possible six for the O’s who host Torquay United on Good Friday.
