Jobi McAnuff once again played the full 90 minutes for Jamaica in their final Copa America game. Having gone down to 1-0 defeats against Uruguay and Paraguay earlier in the competition, even a win over Argentina, ranked third best in the FIFA world rankings, would not have been enough to progress out of the group stage.
McAnuff came up against the likes of Lionel Messi, Angel Di Maria, Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano in the game which was decided by an 11th minute strike from Napoli’s Gonazalo Higuain. The Orient midfielder also exchanged shirts with Lionel Messi at the end of the game in what was the Argentine captain’s 100th cap for his country.
Despite three defeats, the Jamaica team have put in some creditable displays in the tournament against strong opposition and they will now go on to the CONCACAF Gold Cup which begins on July 7th. McAnuff has been named in the provisional 35-man squad, with the final 23 players for the tournament set to be confirmed on June 23rd.
