Orient’s Theo the Wyvern joined representatives from Surrey, West Ham, Harlequins, Tottenham Hotspur, AFC Wimbledon, Saracens, and Queens Park Rangers – as well as friendly interlopers from Octopus Investments and Help for Heroes in front of a 20,000 capacity crowd at the interval of the Surrey v Middlesex Nat West T20 Blast game.
In what was described by a Surrey official as “A rigidly controlled relay race, genuinely testing the athleticism of mascots from across the capital,” the collected mascots were asked to undertake a short obstacle course but proceedings quickly descended into farce and the race was declared null and void.
However, with a winner needing to be crowned to maintain the honour of the event, BBC London’s Johnny Barran spontaneously declared a dance off, with crowd reactions determining the winner!
The clear victor was the break dancing Womble from AFC Wimbledon – who took home the crown for South London! Rivalries were renewed afterwards with a challenge laid down for the London Mascot Derby VI – next year at the Kia Oval!
