The O’s are delighted to have completed the signing of defender Connor Essam from Dover Athletic on a one-year deal for an undisclosed fee.
Much like previous signing Frazer Shaw, Essam has spent a large chunk of pre-season with the O’s and was another to go on the tour to Spain, while also coming back into the Football League via the non-league route.
And with O’s head coach Ian Hendon and his assistant Andy Hessenthaler both knowing Essam from his days at Gillingham, the former admitted offering him a deal was a no brainer.
“We are delighted to bring Connor in and he is someone both I and Andy Hessenthaler have worked with in the past,” Hendon told leytonorient.com.
“We gave him his debut at Gillingham back when me and Andy where there and he was literally a boy. He was a big lad but he was very skinny but now he has physically developed and he has already shown us what he is capable of, but he handled playing in the Conference last year for a season very well and we had no problems in taking Connor.”
Hendon and Hessenthaler handed the now 23-year-old his debut at the Gills, before he went on several loan spells to the likes of Bishop’s Stortford (twice), Dartford, Dover Athletic and Luton Town.
Essam joined Crawley Town on a free transfer from Gillingham, making 11 league appearances for the Reds.
In September 2014, the defender linked up with Dover once more, this time on a permanent basis, and skippered their side as they made their way through the FA Cup, knocking then League Two side Cheltenham Town out of the competition.
And after a successful season with the Kent side, he joined the O’s on trial, before today signing a one-year deal with the Club.
