Scott Kashket’s brace helped Leyton Orient secure their third victory in a week as they defeated Bishop’s Stortford 4-2.
Jobi McAnuff got the ball rolling at the ProKit UK stadium with a shot from the edge of the box, before Scott Kashket scored from the penalty spot and Ollie Palmer added a third before half time.
Matty Fanimo pulled a goal back for the hosts just shy of the hour but Kashket added the O’s fourth six minutes later with a neat backheel. Stortford did reduce the deficit late on though as Fanimo claimed a second.
After spending the majority of pre-season away on international duty with Jamaica, Jobi McAnuff made his first appearance of the summer for the O’s as Alan Dunne skippered the team. Trialists Zaine Francis-Angol and Yann Songo’o started in defence while Jack Parkinson lined up in midfield.
The Bishop’s Stortford squad featured a number of former Orient youth players in their side and it was a former O who had the first chance of the match as Billy Lobjoit raced through one-on-one with Gary Woods but could only fire wide.
Freddy Moncur was making his first start in pre-season for Orient and a couple of minutes later the youngster fizzed a half volley just over the bar.
A minute later Orient broke the deadlock however as forward Scott Kashket ran at the Blue’s defence before laying off the ball to Jobi McAnuff on the edge of the area, who then placed a shot into the bottom corner.
Lobjiot was looking the most threatening for the hosts and the striker came close with another attempt as he attempted a curled effort from the edge of the area which dropped just wide.
Following a quiet spell the O’s were then awarded a penalty 11 minutes before half-time as Kashket got in between two defenders before being brought down inside the box. Kashket then dusted himself off to take the spot-kick and score his third of pre-season with a shot into the bottom-left corner.
Five minutes later Kashket’s strike partner Ollie Palmer added his name the scoresheet as he burst into the penalty are before his shot took a deflection to loop over the head of former Orient goalkeeper Tom Lovelock and drop into the net.
Following the restart the hosts pulled a goal back on the 57th minute when Lobjiot capitalised on a slip from Songo’o to get down the right and pull the back back for Matty Fanimo to slot home.
The O’s soon regained their three-goal advantage however as a Blair Turgott caused a goalmouth scramble and Kashket was alert enough to control the ball with his back to goal before producing a brilliant backheel into the bottom corner.
With nine minutes remaining Stortford managed to grab another consolation however as Fanimo grabbed his second of the match with a well-taken shot from the edge of the box.
Orient conclude their pre-season schedule with a trip to Southend tomorrow (Sunday).
