A hat-trick from Scott Kashket helped a youth O’s side pick up a 5-1 victory in a behind-closed-doors friendly.
Victor Adeboyejo had broken the deadlock for Orient early in the first half, and despite Gillingham levelling the scores before the break, the O’s turned the screw in the second period and Kashket netted a fine treble to put them on course for victory, while Freddy Moncur also got on his name on the scoresheet.
The O’s found themselves 1-0 up inside the opening few minutes when some great work down the left from Sandro Semedo saw the winger beat his man and deliver a pinpoint cross for Adeboyejo to slot home from seven yards.
Gillingham, who included former O’s goalkeeper Glenn Morris in their side along with Doug Loft, did level midway through the half and that was how it remained at the break.
Kashket’s perseverance in the second period went rewarded as he pressurised goalkeeper Morris following Myles Judd’s throughball. The striker was able to dispossess the keeper and he slotted home his first of the afternoon.
Adeboyejo would then turn provider as he fed Kashket who produced a fine curling effort from 20 yards to extend the O’s lead, before he sealed his hat-trick with a lofted effort over Morris after some good build up play involving Adeboyejo and Semedo on the edge of the box.
Kashket’s afternoon was not done yet though as he then pulled the ball back for a late-arriving Moncur who produced a cool finish from 12 yards to round off an impressive display from the O’s youngsters.
On the victory Academy Director Andy Edwards told leytonorient.com: “It was a very positive result and we produced an excellent all-round display.
“There were some fine individual performances across the pitch and it was topped off by a well-taken hat-trick from Scott.”
