The O’s have been waiting patiently to have another game with the Shrimpers after they inflicted a 3-0 defeat earlier in the season.

Myles Judd and Aron Pollock forced early chances with a couple of headers, one going wide and the other being saved. Christian Owusu then drove a low cross across the box but Victor Adeboyejo was unable to make up the ground for an easy tap in, while Judd whipped in the second ball but Adeboyejo was off balance.

More chances fell for Owusu and Adeboyejo as Orient consistently found good positions, but weren’t always entirely confident to pull the trigger. Steven Alzate highlighted this trend when he found himself 20 yards from goal and instead of shooting, tried to go around another couple of defenders.

Early in the second half Josh Koroma was brought on to replace Rian McLean. Another chance fell for Adeboyejo, but the breakthrough eventually came through Alzate. The ball dropped to him on the edge of the box as he drilled a half volley first time into the bottom corner.

The momentum was entirely with Orient as just five minutes later Judd made it 2-0, latching onto a Sam Alderson corner at the far post, and with the keeper out of position, he headed home. The emphasis was attack, and Adeboyejo was again causing problems as he smacked the post from a driven shot.

Owusu made it 3-0 just 10 minutes later, as he weaved his way through the defence only to be taken down inside the box. He stepped up to take the penalty himself and although the effort straight down the middle was saved, he was able to put the rebound away.

Charley Barker was brought on with 15 minutes to go, replacing Adeboyejo, while Tristan Abrahams replaced Owusu. Sam Sargeant then made a great triple save, first saving low to his right with unbelievable reflexes, secondly from header and finally to punch the ball clear.

There was still time to add another goal as after a weak back pass from the Southend defence, Alzate calmly passed across for Koroma to slide home into an empty net.

ORIENT: Sam Sargeant, Myles Judd, Dan Happe, Aron Pollock, Sam Telling, Sam Alderson, Henry Ocheing, Steven Alzate, Rian McLean (Josh Koroma 55), Victor Adeboyejo (Charley Barker 75), Christian Owusu (Tristan Abrahams 75).
