Born in Plaistow and living in the Leyton area for much of his life, Peter Derbyshire worked for the London Borough of Waltham Forest and occasionally helped out at the club with youth and leisure activities.
A lifelong Orient fan, Peter travelled home and away and has treasured memories of the O’s during their one and only season in the old First Division, now the Premier League of course. Some more recent recollections of memorable matches are Oldham Athletic at home in the FA Cup in 1992, the Hull City play-off semi-final at Brisbane Road in 2001 and the FA Cup victory at Fulham away in 2006.
Unfortunately, Peter is now suffering ill health and is unable to travel to games from his home in Peterborough but to make his 80th birthday just that little bit more special, his son Rob contacted the club and asked if we could help with surprising his dad with some O’s birthday gifts.
Consequently, Peter is now the proud owner of a replica O’s shirt emblazoned with his name on the back plus a birthday card and football, both signed by the squad.
Rob said, “I wanted to express my sincere thanks, and also pass on the thanks of my family for all that you did in arranging for my father’s gifts for his birthday on Sunday.
“He was delighted with the signed ball and especially the shirt. It was very considerate of you to assist us in realising our ideas for his gifts.”
And one of Peter’s three daughters, Marie, added, “Can I just echo my thanks on this. There’s not much for Dad to be cheerful about these days but the O’s are still guaranteed to get a comment from him and for him to engage with us – so it’s really, really special that you can do a little something extra for us on this special day to make it extraordinary. It is much appreciated and helped to make a day that will be difficult to distinguish from all the other days for Dad at the moment that little bit more memorable.”
We’re glad we could help and would like to wish Peter a very Happy Birthday and thank him for his continued loyalty over the decades. Up the O’s!
