PREVIEW: Bristol Rovers (A)

access_time 6 years ago

Leyton Orient travel to Bristol Rovers today looking to build on their 3-2 Boxing Day win over Portsmouth.

A brace for Ollie Palmer and Jay Simpson’s 17th goal of the season saw off Pompey, despite a double from Gareth Evans themselves.

The O’s currently sit ninth in League Two and are on a six-game unbeaten run going into the fixture. Orient are just a point off today’s hosts, who sit in fifth place with 37 points from their 23 games.

The Gas come into the game on the back of a goalless draw at AFC Wimbledon, who had Paul Robinson sent off after just four minutes.

They were unable to turn the numerical advantage into a victory on their travels, but the draw means Darrell Clarke’s side are unbeaten in five games ahead of today’s match.

The O’s maintained their 100 per cent start to the campaign with a 2-0 victory at the Matchroom Stadium in the reverse fixture.

Lloyd James’ 22nd minute penalty put Orient in front after Tyler Lyttle was adjudged to have brought down Paul McCallum, before Jay Simpson added a second in first half stoppage time as Rovers’ 20 game unbeaten record away from home came to an end.

ORIENT: Cisak, Clohessy, Shaw, Essam, Baudry (Dunne 46), Cox, James, Pritchard (Turgott 79), Moore, McCallum, Simpson (Palmer 71).

Subs not used: Maguire, Kashket, Grainger, Moncur.

Orient skipper Mathieu Baudry is suspended following a straight red card picked up in the second half of the 3-2 win over Portsmouth on Boxing Day.

League Two’s top goalscorer Jay Simpson is a doubt having come off with calf injury in the Pompey victory, while midfielder Lloyd James is struggling with an ankle injury sustained against Yeovil Town, and could miss the encounter against his hometown club.

Blair Turgott and John Marquis both made the matchday squad against Pompey despite hamstring and knee injuries respectively and are likely to be available once again, as is Connor Essam following his first O’s appearance since the end of October having returned from an ankle injury.

Sammy Moore is ahead of schedule in his recover from a burst blood capsule behind his knee, but the Rovers match is likely to have come too soon for the midfielder.

Paul McCallum and Dean Cox both continue their rehabilitation from respective knee ligament injuries and remain as the only long-term absentees.

For Bristol Rovers, Chris Lines is out with a groin problem, while they have also picked up injuries to the likes of Stuart Sinclair and goalkeeper Will Puddy.

BETTING (Sky Bet Odds correct at the time of preview)

Leyton Orient defeated Bristol Rovers 2-0 in the reverse fixture and a repeat of that scoreline today is 16/1, while the O’s are 13/5 to pick up victory at the Memorial Ground.

A Rovers win is priced at 11/10, while the draw is 23/10.

It could be a clash of the two top goalscorers in League Two with the Gas’ Matty Taylor potential coming up against O’s 17-goal man Jay Simpson.

The duo are 4/1 and 5/1 respectively to score the opener, while the next best for both sides are Jermaine Easter (11/2) and O’s two-goal hero on Boxing Day Ollie Palmer (13/2).
