As part of the wider Cycling is my Goal project, Saturday, February 27, marked the first ever Leyton Orient Official match day ride to a game and saw local residents and fans alike hop on two wheels to get to the game. On arrival they received a free ticket to watch the O’s emerge victorious against Crawley Town.
The route started in Chingford with riders coming as far as Epsom and Islington to join in as it weaved its way down the borough to Walthamstow and finally on to the stadium arriving in time for the match against Crawley Town. Pre match there was also the opportunity for riders to get their bikes checked out thanks to Dr Bike clinics held by Cycle Confident and the Bike Shack Leyton.
‘It was fantastic to welcome so many cyclists of all ages for our first event, it’s great to support people to explore the borough and show them how easy and safe it is to get to the game via bike too,” said Phillip Smith, Health and Wellbeing Activator of the Leyton Orient Trust.
“The health benefits of walking or cycling to games can be extremely impactful and so hopefully the rides will continue to grow to support us being one of the healthiest stadia and clubs in London.”
Nick Fripp, ride leader and route organiser added: ‘The smiles say more than an infinity of words. It was great to get so much interest in the first ride with everyone enjoying the route. An alley cat or two, a backstreet boogie, some safe infrastructure and a pretty park were enjoyed on our way from Chingford and Walthamstow libraries to Leyton Orient. To cap it all, the O’s won too!’
Plans are already being put in place for the next official matchday ride which will be held before the game against Mansfield Town on Saturday, April 30. More information will be released on this ride via the Leyton Orient Trust website and twitter @lotrust in the coming weeks
The wider ‘Cycling is my Goal’ project aims to improve people’s confidence to cycle on the road and explore their local area. The next five week block of the project will be open for families, there will be two groups running, one on Saturday mornings commencing on April 9 and one on Thursday evenings commencing April 14.
The programme is completely free and we’ll even provide bikes if you don’t have your own! For more details or to sign up to this programme please visit www.leytonorienttrust.org/cyclingismygoal
