O's Supporters pay their respects to the Clapton Orient lads who gave their all for their country

access_time 5 years ago
Four coaches and a convoy of cars will be leaving E10 early tomorrow as over 200 O’s fans and friends of the club make their way over to the battlefields of northern France to pay their respects, not only to the countless thousands who lost their lives, but in particular the three Clapton Orient players who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Battle of the Somme in 1916; centre-forward William Jonas – the ladies favourite at Millfields Road, the loyal and reliable defender George Scott and goal-ace and life-saver Richard McFadden.
Travelling with the group will be family representatives of George Scott and Richard McFadden which will make the pilgrimage even more special.
Visits will be made to the resting places of the three Orient legends including Delville Wood where William Jonas gave up his life. William’s body could not be retrieved causing his remains to be lost to the elements. Consequently Private Jonas is officially remembered at the huge Thiepval Memorial which is on the itinerary as is Lochnagar Crater, the Football League’s memorial at Longueval and of course the O’s Memorial in Flers.
The itinerary is attached should anyone wish to meet up with the O’s Somme Tour as the O’s fans of today thank the Orient boys of one hundred years ago.
The Somme region is within one and half hours drive due south of Calais.
