A Leyton Orient XI were denied victory by a late equalier at Greenwich Borough.

Paul McCallum had headed the O’s into a two-goal lead with similar finishes from corners, though the non-league outfit managed by former Orient duo Gary Alexander and John Mackie mounted a late comeback to claim a draw.

For the trip to the DGS Marine Stadium, Orient included a number of first-team players such as Charlie Grainger, Nicky Hunt and Paul McCallum, and with the match only a couple of minutes old Josh Doherty saw an effort well held.

Both sides were struggling to break each other down throughout the opening exchanges, but the O’s were able to work another chance midway through the first half when Scott Kashket drilled an attempt over the bar, before curling a free-kick wide eight minutes before the interval.

With two minutes left of the first half Victor Adeboyejo looked to try and find a breakthough, though his effort was well-saved by the goalkeeper.

Following half-time Orient made two changes, with defenders Aron Pollock and Dan Happe replacing Hunt and trialist Reece Brown, and within a couple of minutes of the restart Adeboyejo was once again denied by the ‘keeper having been played through by Henry Ochieng.

The O’s were able to take the lead three minutes shy of the hour mark however, with McCallum providing the telling touch from a Kashket corner.

Seven minutes later the pair were at it again, as another inswinging delivery from Kashket was headed home by McCallum to double the O’s advantage.

Keen to claim his hat-trick, McCallum looked to try and register his third on the 79th minute but it was to be to no avail as the goalkeeper was able to keep out his attempt and parry it behind for a corner.

Greenwich were then able to reduce the deficit nine minutes from time with a precise curling effort from outside the area to set up a tense final period.

With the hosts looking to find an equaliser Josh Koroma, who had produced yet another lively display, had the chance to restore the O’s two-goal cushion after combining well with McCallum, only to see his left-footed drive parried over the bar.

However in response to the chance, the hosts were able to salvage a draw two minutes from the end as a ball across from the right was bundled beyond Grainger and into the O’s net.
