Leyton Orient under-18s recorded an emphatic 5-0 victory at Stevenage on Saturday to maintain their 100 per cent start to the season.
Richard Thomas fielded arguably his strongest team this season, with the exception of captain Charley Barker who is sidelined for four months with a stress fracture to his back, whilst Josh Koroma and Myles Judd returned to the side following their spells with the first team.
Tristan Abrahams had the first chance for Orient. A long ball from Arthur Janata was flicked on by Sam Dalby, giving Abrahams space to run in behind and split the two central defenders before firing a shot from outside the box over.
Stevenage should have taken the lead minutes later however, when a poor pass from Janata meant Boro were able to capitalise but Claudio Ofosu’s shot from inside the box went high over the bar.
Having created a larger number of chances and majority of possession, Thomas’ side made the breakthrough five minutes before half time. Myles Judd crossed the ball from the right and the flick on header from Abrahams fell for Dalby who made no mistake in putting the O’s in front.
When coming out for the second half the O’s switched to three at the back, providing Henry Ochieng with the opportunity to further support the attackers. Credit goes to Dan Happe, Rian McLean and Toby Stevenson who adjusted well to the change and proved vital for the final scoreline.
The young O’s then managed to double their lead with 62 minutes on the clock. Stevenson played a great ball to switch the play to Judd who delivered a well-timed ball and at the second time of asking Steven Alzate finished the move after having his initial shot blocked.
With only 15 minutes left to play the O’s turned on the style and added a third. A free-kick from the right flank found Alzate who directed a header into the path of Abrahams for the forward to take a touch and skilfully backheel the ball home to get himself on the score sheet.
Seconds later Alzate and Abrahams combined again to double the latter’s tally, with the forward producing a wonderful bicycle kick which flew into the back of the net to make it 4-0 to the O’s.
The O’s had time for one more goal with five minutes to go. Substitute Ruel Sotirou played a one-two with Abrahams down the right side of the box and his ball in was met by Dalby who was able to double his tally. That made it 5-0, a familiar scoreline for the O’s who had claimed an identical victory against Barnet on the second game of season.
The young O’s now have an impressive 21 goals from six games and yet another clean sheet.
Next up for the under-18s is a visit from Northampton Town next Saturday, kick off 10:30am.
