NEWS: Hackney Girls to represent O's at EFL Kids Cup

access_time 5 years ago
Taking place at the newly-refurbished 4G football pitch at Salisbury Hall in Chingford recently, the under-13 girls’ football team from Stoke Newington School in Hackney progressed to the area finals of the EFL Girls Cup and will now go on to represent the O’s at the tournament hosted by Millwall in early January next year.
Each of the 72 Football League clubs organise their own local schools competition with the winning school going on to represent their professional football team at the area, regional and national final should they progress.
Deserved winners, Stoke Newington, qualified by defeating Chingford Foundation School from Chingford 3-0 in a closely-matched final despite the look of the scoreline. Ten schools took part, each playing one another with the top four moving to a semi-final knock-out.
Progression at the area finals would mean entry into the regional finals in Swindon during February and one step away from a Wembley appearance and the ultimate game against a northern region school played prior to the Checkatrade Trophy final on April 2 2017.
Ian Bruce, teacher at the school and team manager said, “Stoke Newington are delighted to be representing Leyton Orient once again at the EFL area final at Millwall. The girls played fantastic football to qualify and are looking forward to the next stage of the competition.”
Howard Gould, Leyton Orient Community Liaison Officer said, “The Girls Cup, and equivalent Kids Cup for boys, is more than just a football tournament due to the tremendous prize that awaits the eventual finalists – playing at Wembley Stadium!
“I know Ian (Bruce) and Steve (Clark) will have the girls working hard in training and the club are right behind them as they look to reach the next stage which will be a first for Leyton Orient in the girls competition.  The school have done very well, achieving the area finals once again, as they did last year, and hopefully the experience of last season will hold them in good stead to go at least a stage further.
“I’d also like to thank all the other schools that took part, namely:- Buxton, Lammas, Leytonstone, Highams Park, Heathcote, Frederick Bremer, Kelmscott and Walthamstow School for Girls”.
