Orient’s most recent league match saw them fall to a 0-3 defeat against Cambridge United Women at Mile End Stadium a fortnight ago.
However, they bounced back in emphatic style by progressing to the FA Women’s National League Cup First Round with a superb 1-5 victory against Swindon Town Ladies last weekend.
Chris Brayford’s side go into the game sitting eighth in the division having taken three points from their first two games of the season (1W 1L).
This match will be the first of three games in eight days for the O’s who will be keen to take maximum points from a busy fixture schedule in September.
As for Stevenage, they go into the game in seventh place and level on points with the O’s after one win and one defeat from their opening two matches.
In their latest league fixture, they travelled to Billericay Town Ladies losing 6-1 on August 26th having overcome Actonians Ladies 5-2 on the opening weekend.
Last week, Stevenage were beaten 1-4 at home to Southern Division outfit Cardiff City Ladies in the FA Women’s National League Cup Determining Round.
The O’s will be without midfielder Egle Trezzi and defender Kathryn Canavan for the trip to Stevenage this weekend.
Meanwhile, left-back Leyre Bastyr will be moving to New York for three months meaning Sunday will be her last game for the O’s until 2019.
Orient’s Katharine Nutman has started each of their first three games across league and cup this season. After signing for the O’s during the summer, Nutman has proven to be an experienced addition to the squad whose tenacity and physicality are quickly seeing her become a key figure in the centre of midfield.
For Stevenage, Nicole Emmings has netted four goals in their opening three matches in league and cup this season. She bagged a brace in the 5-2 win over Actonians on the opening day before netting in the defeats to Billericay Town and Cardiff City respectively.
Last season, the O’s visited Stevenage Ladies on Sunday 26th November and came away with a 0-2 victory thanks to a Danielle Griffiths penalty and Sarka Stryhalova’s close-range finish three minutes from time.
Orient’s final home fixture of the 2017/18 season saw them come up against Stevenage in the reverse fixture on 13th May. Goals from Hannah Porter and Stryhalova were cancelled out by Amy Makewell and Rebecca Scola in a frantic 2-2 stalemate.
This week, captain Danielle Griffiths gave her views ahead of the game:
“Both teams have had a mixed start to the FA Women’s National League but following our convincing win in the cup last week, we know we are back in form and confidence is high. We are aware of Stevenage’s strengths from last season so will make sure we are prepared to counter those on Sunday.”
On the subject of playing three games in eight days, Griffiths said:
“The start of the season is so important and it is crucial to get points on the board early and set momentum for the rest of the season. Although the games are coming thick and fast in September, we have a great squad who we can call on at any time to get a result. Hopefully that will see us coming away with maximum points in the coming days.”
