Hector Kyprianou and Bradley McClenaghan were on the scoresheet for Orient as Lewis Spencer’s men suffered defeat in the Cup.
Following a 1-1 draw on the opening game of the season, both teams will have been looking to get one over the other, unfortunately, The Posh came out on top this time around.
The Posh wasted no time and took the lead after just five minutes, a throw in down the left flank came to their forward on the edge of the box who smartly played the ball through the defenders legs with an exquisite back heel, giving the striker time and space to hammer the ball into the bottom left corner.
An instant response would have been perfect for the O’s, and Charles Clayden nearly gave Lewis Spencer’s side just that.
The pacey winger powered into the box but could only hit the post with a low drive. The following attack saw Peterborough double their lead.
Though it seemed Orient had dealt with the danger, Rhys Byrne’s quick forward ball was cut out by a blue shirt. The midfielder then lobbed the ball over Byrne from 30-yards as the keeper had come off his line to distribute the ball.
Moments before half-time Orient found their goal. Clayden whipped a corner to the back post where Hector Kyprianou looped a header into the top corner.
It looked the perfect time for Orient to score with the opportunity to regroup at half-time and come back from only 2-1 down in the second half.
Peterborough had different ideas and quickly re-established their two goal lead straight from the restart.
Samuel Amedu who had replaced Rhys Byrne midway through the first half made a smart save with his leg in a 1v1 situation. The ball then looped in the air where an away player had space to send a looping volley into an unguarded net.
The setback of conceding again didn’t seem too damaging to the O’s as the side pulled a goal back straight after the restart. Another corner whipped in from Clayden found Jaedon Phillips deep at the far post. Phillips’ cut back was easily tapped into the net by Bradley McClenaghan and Orient again looked to be back into the game, only 3-2 down.
However, Peterborough restored their advantage as they capitalised from their own set piece to make the score 4-2. A free-kick from the right flank was powered low towards the front post and was met by an attacker who converted the ball into the net.
The fifth and final Peterborough goal came ten minutes before time. A simple through ball in between the Orient centre-backs and the forward was clear through on goal. Amedu tried to close down the striker, rushing off his line, but the forward kept his cool and dinked the ball home for the final goal of the game.
