Team Leyton Orient Trust take part in RideLondon

The Leyton Orient Trust fundraising team joined thousands of cyclists riding 100 miles in the annual Prudential RideLondon event on Sunday 4 August 2019. The team of five was Mike Spencer, Francis Scoltock (loyal O’s fans and previous participants on Leyton Orient Trust’s healthy lives programmes); Neil Taylor (Leyton Orient Trust, Chief Executive); Marcus Mellor and Liam Adams (from The Energy Check, sponsors of Leyton Orient Football Club).

The ride started in East London and finished at the Mall via the roads and hills of London and Surrey. The team had varying cycling experience – Mike, Francis and Neil have previously taken part in the event for the Trust; whereas Marcus and Liam had started training at the beginning of the year, and for both this was the longest distance they’ve cycled.

As well as providing riders with an opportunity and challenge to work towards, Leyton Orient Trust, an independent charity, uses this event to raise funds to help continue its work in the local community. However, due to the Club’s tragic loss over the summer, some of the riders chose to re-direct their support to the JE 3 Foundation. This foundation set up by the family of Justin Edinburgh aims to raise awareness of heart and brain health and to campaign to change the law to ensure all health and fitness clubs across the UK are equipped with defibrillators. RideLondon took place the day after what would have been Justin Edinburgh’s first game back in the EFL.

Marcus Mellor, Corporate Partnerships Manager, The Energy Check, said: “It was an absolute pleasure to represent Leyton Orient Trust in the RideLondon. In what was one of the toughest challenges of my life, I was proud to wear the Leyton Orient badge.”

Neil, Chief Executive of Leyton Orient Trust, said: “This is the second year that we have taken part in the Ride London event and were really pleased on how it went this year. Thanks to the team for taking time out to train and raise funding for us and the Justin Edinburgh 3 Foundation. We are now planning for our involvement in the ride next year. If you would like to ride for us then please let in touch.”
