LOWFC PREVIEW: Abingdon United WFC (A)

After making a flying start to their league campaign, Orient now turn their attentions to the F.A Cup, as they travel to Oxfordshire this weekend to take on Abingdon United in the Second Qualifying Round of the tournament.

Last Time Out

The O’s picked up their fourth consecutive win last weekend, beating AFC Basildon 3-0 at the Mile End Stadium. Although the scoreline would suggest this was a fairly routine win for Orient, things could have been very different had Naomi Ogunde not kept out Grace Gillard’s penalty early on in the second half.

However, that saved spot-kick seemed to give the O’s the impetus they needed to continue their fine start to the season, and goals from Sophie Le Marchand, Paige Anderson-James and Otesha Charles ended up securing all three points for the home side.

View on the Opposition

Managed by James Thorpe, Abingdon ply their trade in the Southern Region Premier Division. They currently occupy third place in that division having won two of their three games played, including an impressive 5-0 defeat of Warsash Wasps.

Two late goals saw them knock out Aylesford in the last round and despite playing their football slightly lower in the league pyramid than Orient, they’ll be hoping to invoke some of the famous magic of the cup on Sunday and cause an upset.

Pre-Match Thoughts

Prior to this weekend’s game we spoke to O’s central defender Leyre Bastyr and she was keen to emphasise that her side won’t be taking the opposition lightly:

“We’re excited for the opportunity to make it far in this tournament and working hard with that goal in mind, but we’re making sure we focus on one match at a time. With each passing week I can see us melding more as a team and it gives me confidence that we can keep delivering good results.

Although Abingdon United are in the league below us, they are doing well and it is important that we don’t let our guard down. We will be looking to go into the game focused and willing to put in 100% effort to ensure a win.”

Coming to the Game?

The match takes place this Sunday October 6th at Northcourt Road, Abingdon, OX14 1PL, with kick off scheduled for 2pm.
