The former professional goalkeeper, who played in the Premier League for both Leicester City and Charlton Athletic, becomes the latest member of Kenny Jackett’s backroom staff.
Royce’s career also saw him represent QPR, Gillingham and Brentford – with a seven year coaching spell at the Bees following his retirement.
He then moved onto Gillingham to take up a coaching role, which he left last summer.
“It’s a great opportunity for me to join an ambitious club and work with people I know from my playing days in Kenny Jackett and Joe Gallen,” said Royce.
“Kenny is straight down the line and knows the game inside out. He wants everything done right and is a very organised person; his record now speaks for itself, and I think it’s a great coup for the club.”
“We need to hit the ground running; it’s helped me by knowing a couple of the staff, including Matt Harrold, but now we’re coming together and the setup is brilliant.”
Having worked with Royce at QPR, Jackett knows just what he can expect from his newest recruit.
“Simon is a vastly experienced goalkeeping coach, and his knowledge of goalkeepers is very good – which is going to be important in the coming years.
“He’s very capable, he knows what he wants, and he works his goalkeepers hard – which is what I want, a fit, hardworking ethos. And he represents those values.”
Royce’s appointment follows the news that Joe Gallen was appointed Assistant Manager yesterday.
