Northampton proved to be a tough opposition for the young Orient side, but positives in performance gives confidence ahead of Gillingham.

This morning saw the young O’s play their first game of the season against a strong Northampton side, with two goals from Northampton’s Connor and the other from Abimbola – with Orient’s only goal coming from Smith-Kouassi.

The first good opportunity came to Leyton Orient, with the ball progressing down the right hand side with some nice link up play, but a rushed effort from C.Pegrum saw the ball go wide.

An attempt from 25 yards saw Sodje strike the ball well after a ball from C.Pegrum, but the keeper was ready for it.

A positive run down the left-hand side from Northampton’s Ngwa saw a delightful ball land on the head of their striker Connor, who buried the header low to the right of Phillips’ grasp.

After 30 minutes a corner ball for Northampton saw the ball whipped in from Watkins causing problems for Phillips, which led to a scrappy fight for the ball. This led to a header from Northampton’s Abimbola which seemed to have been kept out, but the linesman confirmed the goal.

Late on in the first half, a nice dummy from Orient’s Tanga saw the ball find Smith down the right-hand side. Nice link up play between the two players saw them breakthrough the defence with a calm finish from Smith-Kouassi.

A change in the first half for Northampton saw the injured Lack taken off for Curry inside 42 minutes.

The last minutes of the first half saw a counterattack from Orient leaded by Smith-Kouassi who beat his man with his pace.

However, the final ball into the box was collected safely by the keeper, seeing Northampton lead the game 2-1 going into the second half.

HALF TIME: Northampton 2-1 Leyton Orient

The first great opportunity of the second half came from Leyton Orient after five minutes, as Smith-Kouassi played the ball out wide to Davies – seeing him move the ball inside before taking a finessed shot just over of the top right-hand corner.

Not long after, a sensational effort from Northampton’s Hill saw his effort smashed against the crossbar, after he ran onto a loose ball from 25 yards out before striking the ball after taking one touch.

After 75 minutes a great opportunity came to Davies down the left wing after delivering a great ball across goal towards Tanga who was arriving back post – however his guided effort went wide of the post

Seconds later, a great chance for Smith-Kouassi presented itself as he beat his man, but a wild effort on goal saw his effort blaze over the crossbar.

Powerful and dangerous runs from Tanga on the right wing saw him fouled, bringing a great opportunity from a free kick, but it came to nothing.

A mistake from Orient’s Davies saw the ball land to Northampton’s Curry who played a through ball into Ngwa seeing him one-on-one with Phillips, but his effort flew over the bar – which could’ve extended their lead in the game.

With the last few minutes of the game a bursting run down the left-hand side from Northampton’s Curry saw his attempted shot parried by Phillips – with a leg race from Orient’s Kwatchey and Northampton’s Connor to get to the loose ball first. The ball was won by Connor who taped it in the open net.

After a lively second half, the game finished as a win for the hosts, but Orient will be hopeful of regrouping ahead of Gillingham.
