The 10am game against Ridgeway Rovers Ladies saw Tara Copeland captaining for the first game of the season, and winger Giulia Livi drafted in as an emergency keeper with Lola Durojaiye ruled out.
After a slow start to the game, with Rovers’ dominating possession for the first ten minutes, The O’s pick up the pace and saw their first chance as Copeland’s shot drew a fine save from Rovers’ GK.
Moments later a Rovers’ free kick from the left was blocked well by Bianca Corradi as she drove up the pitch before a heavy tackle.
Orient then took charge, winning a series of free kicks and a corner but were unable to create a clear-cut goalscoring opportunity.
In the 23rd minute the O’s made took the lead, with Eve Pearson’s precise pass releasing Liliana Almeida who finished with a swerving shot deceiving the Rovers’ GK before hitting the back of the net.
In the 30th minute O’s vice captain, Zahmena Malik, was replaced by Eleisia Williams as Rovers began to force their way back into the game.
The O’s failed to deal with a Rovers free kick and stand-in keeper Livi showed quick reactions, making a fine double save from close range to maintain Orient’s narrow lead.
Moments later, weak defending from the O’s allowed Rovers centre forward a shot which seemed destined for the bottom left corner until Livi’s fingertip save pushed the ball out for a corner.
The emergency keeper’s save spurred Orient into action and the 38th minute Almeida almost doubled their lead, only for the shot to be blocked at the last moment.
Unfortunately, this incident brought the game to an early end as Rover’s goalie and a defender collided. The resulting injury required medical treatment and lead to the game being abandoned.
Despite the unfortunate ending to the game, LOFC Women had given a good account of themselves in their first competitive fixture and can be proud of their performance.
