An interview with our very own Zech Obiero

Can you just tell us a little bit about your footballing background and when you joined Leyton Orient?

“I was at Tottenham from a young age from U8s all the way to U14. I got released at U14 and I took a year out, to just play a bit of football, and to get the feel of football again; just to relax and have fun with it. Then U16s I came to Orient and from there I’ve been in the U16s and a first year now.”

What position do you play, and what made you want to play there?

“I play Central Attacking Midfielder, and what made me want to play there is that I like to be creative on the ball, I like to make stuff happen, assist people and also goals.”

If you had to compare yourself to a player in your position that best resembles your playing style, who would it be and why?

“I don’t think I play like anyone; I feel like I have my own playing style. But I like players in the 10 role, like how Neymar rolls into the 10 role and Ozil used to play in the 10. I like players like that.”

What would you say is your best attribute?

“I’d say creativity and ball striking ability.”

Do you have any goals that you want to achieve with your time at Leyton Orient?

“I’d like to push into the first team, in the future maybe be a regular in the first team. From there just kick on my career really.”

Can you remember what your first pair of football boots were?

“It might’ve been a pair of Nike Tiempos, they were black with an orange tick. Ronaldinho was wearing them; my dad is a fan of players like that, so I was too young to be watching them, but he just adopted that into me really.”

What football team do you support? And who’s your favourite player?

“Arsenal unfortunately… my favourite player is probably Neymar.”

What is your favourite food?

“I don’t really have a favourite food I just have a standard maybe pasta, rice and chicken stuff like that.”

What sort of music do you listen to?

“I listen to a bit of everything really, you’ve got afrobeat’s, you’ve got gospel, American rap. A bit of everything, whatever I’m in the mood for.”

What is your favourite song to listen to before a game?

“Not a particular song, whatever the boys have on at the time. Who’s in charge of the stereo? I normally am, I’m the DJ *laughs* but yeah I just throw on whatever the boys are feeling really.”

Who inspires you as a young person?

“I’m inspired by Bukayo Saka, I like his character, and how he plays the game at such a young age, and Jude Bellingham. I think them two are mature in how they play the game and how they carry themselves.”

What’s your all-time favourite TV show or film?

“You know what I like the Fast and Furious series. That’s a bit of class that. I’m finishing Money Heist and I’m trying not to hear from people that are spoiling it, but nah that’s really good.”
