ORIENT drew a blank at Luton Town as Jon Shaw's second half header gave the Hatters a 1-0 win at Kenilworth Road on Saturday.

Shaw's goal was enough to settle a game played out in front of 1,607 as the O's struggled to make an impression in front of goal.

Since putting five past Sutton at the beginning of the summer Russell Slade's men have had difficulty in finding the net and Luton took advantage of that by sneaking the win.

Missing Jamie Jones, Kevin Lisbie and Mathieu Baudry with niggles, there were first starts of pre-season for Ryan Allsop and David Mooney as the O's searched for their first win in three attempts against Blue Square Bet Premier outfits.

It was the hosts who had the first half chances of the contest, with striker Andre Gray providing a lively outlet up front.

With six minutes on the clock he swept a shot wide of the near post after the Hatters moved the ball down the right hand side to cut back into the centre.

Five minutes later he fired past the other upright, with the chance this time being provided by Stuart Fleetwod, who threaded a pass through into the right channel for the striker.

Orient began to see more of the ball as the half wore on and David Mooney drew the first save of the afternoon from Hatters keeper Mark Tyler on 31 minutes, but the Irishman's effort lacked the power required to trouble the stopper.

Seven minutes later Tyler was almost caught out when he momentarily ventured from his line as Moses Odubajo was tackled as he entered the area on the by-line. Odubajo picked himself up to cut back for Dean Cox, but the winger pulled his shot wide of the mark.

Luton ended the half with a free kick from Yaser Kasim that was curled past the right hand post but genuine opportunities were few and far between in a low key first half.

Trialists Johnny Ertl and Ahmed Kashi made their bow at the break, but they quickly found themselves chasing the game at Luton moved in front thanks to Shaw's header, which dropped into the net via the far post following a cross from the right.

Michael Symes missed a great chance to level on 66 when Ryan Brunt's pinpoint cross found his strike partner in the heart of the box, but the former Bournemouth man's header was placed wide of the mark.

Ertl was next to go close, shooting straight at Tyler in the Luton goal following a searching long throw from Nathan Clarke, but there was no route back for the O's.

Orient: Jones; James (McSweeney 79), Cuthbert (Chorley 61), Clarke, Sawyer; Odubajo, Griffith (Kashi 46), Smith (Ertl 46), Cox (Laird 87); Symes, Mooney (Brunt 61)

Attendance: 1,607 (111 away)
