Slade - Now We Need The Sharpness

30 July 2012

Manager's focus on building for start of the season

RUSSELL SLADE says his team's match sharpness will return over the final couple of weeks of pre-season as the countdown to the opening game at Charlton in the Capital One Cup begins.

The O's were beaten 1-0 by Dartford on Saturday but again manager Slade was less interested in the result than the workout it gave the east Londoners.

He explained: "We're only going into the sharp work over the next two weeks or so.

"We've got the base fitness now which is good, and I feel that we've finished all of our games strongly.

"I just think that we need to get that sharpness now which will give us that extra five percent on a Saturday or Tuesday.

"I keep telling you it's not about the result and it was just as much not about the result when we beat Wolves 2-0.

"Players have got minutes under their belt again. We were average in the first half and we didn't pass the ball particularly well.

"In the second half I thought we dominated most of the game and should have got ourselves a couple of goals.

"We need to get our shooting boots on for sure but I was much more pleased with the second half performance."
