O's Return With Entertaining Win

Sutton United 3 - 5 Leyton Orient
Pre-Season Friendly

ORIENT began their pre-season programme with an entertaining 5-3 win at Sutton United on Wednesday night.

Strikers Kevin Lisbie and Ryan Brunt were on target, along with Dean Cox, as the senior O's players established a 3-2 interval lead, before a more youthful bunch finished off the job thanks to a brace from second year scholar Affy Obafemi.

It was a goal-packed return to action for the O's, whose 22 players all played 45 minutes on the night.

The 599-strong crowd at Gander Green Lane didn't have to wait long for the first goal, as just over a minute had been played when Brunt's long throw dropped in the box for strike partner Lisbie to fire home.

Orient's lead was only to last three minutes though, with Stefan Payne converting from the spot for the hosts after Mathieu Baudry was adjudged to have committed a foul inside the box.

Midway though the half it was 2-1 to the visitors and this time it was Brunt's turn to get on the scoresheet as the Stoke loanee ran onto a misplaced header back from the Sutton midfield to drill into the bottom left corner from 25 yards.

Again, though, Sutton hit back immediately and slack defending was to blame as Kyle Vassell found himself clear to slot past Jamie Jones in the O's goal.

Orient ensured they would go into the break in front thanks to Cox, who was fed by Kevin Lisbie after the striker harried the home defender and fed his winger through.

Away boss Russell Slade made 11 changes at the interval, giving trials to Martin Rowlands, Joe Turner and George Saunders, as well as giving six second year scholars a run out.

And it was one of the youth team players who stole the show to bag two goals of his own.

Obafemi gave notice of his intentions with a stinging shot that former Orient keeper Tom Lovelock touched over the bar, but it was Sutton in fact who first drew level - again from the spot - through Gareth Gwillim on 64 minutes.

However, Orient soon secured victory thanks to Obafemi's brace, the first coming from a neat finish following another defensive howler a minute later.

Then, moments later, he picked himself up after being fouled in the box to send Lovelock the wrong way and ensure it would finish 5-3 to the O's.
