PREVIEW: 'We're Getting Stronger'

5 October 2012

Manager delighted with O's progress as Londoners prepare for Saturday's visit of Sheffield United

ORIENT moved into the top half of the League 1 table for the first time this season with victory over Walsall on Tuesday and now boss Russell Slade is keen to keep that run going when his side face Sheffield United at Brisbane Road on Saturday.

The O's have won four out of their last six fixtures to recover from losing their first three League games of the campaign and Slade was particuarly impressed with how the Londoners bounced back from defeat to Doncaster with that win over the Saddlers.

With Sheffield United next in town, the boss is under no illusions as to the size of the task the promotion favourites will provide, but is nevertheless quietly confident of securing a result.

"The way we bounced back from the Doncaster game was pleasing," he said. "We were tactically sound at Walsall, we created chances, particularly in the first half, scored a couple of goals and were nice and solid.

"It's a little bit dangerous to be looking at League tables [this early in the season] but performances are, by and large, getting stronger as the games go by and that's what we're looking for.

"The only downside to that is that with all the games, injury problems and suspensions start looming, so we have to be mindful of that.

"With the squad we have, each and every day we have to be careful, and more than that be wise, with what we do.

"We put in a lot of work in on a fairly soft pitch on Tuesday, so that was quite sapping, but we're taking control of the situation with who rested a little bit and who did a bit more work on Thursday.

"The group was back together and at it again on Friday.

"Sheffield United have had a solid start and not lost a game. I'm sure Danny [Wilson] would have liked to have won more of the games he's drawn, but they've had a good strong start and for me they're still the favourites to go up.

"Possibly this one will show us how far we've come, but all the games throw up different challenges. It was a challenge on Tuesday and a challenge in defeat to Doncaster.

"For sure, Sheffield United will be a big test."
