5 September 2012

Find out how our rivals got on in round one action

MANY of Orient's League 1 rivals were in Johnstone's Paint Trophy action on Tuesday night as the knockout competition for clubs in Leagues 1 & 2 got underway.

Russell Slade's men had the luxury of a free night after they were awarded a first round bye and they will join the competition at the next stage in the last 32.

In the Southern Section, Portsmouth edged a thrilling game against South Coast rivals Bournemouth, twice coming from behind to draw 2-2, then triumph on penalties thanks to misses from Lee Barnard and Marc Pugh.

Milton Keynes Dons suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat at local rivals Northampton Town, Jake Robinson's 11th minute goal putting the League 2 outfit through.

Dagenham & Redbridge also bridged the division gap between them and Stevenage, sending Boro crashing out in an exciting 3-2 scoreline.

There was no such hardship for Yeovil Town against League 2 opposition, as a late brace from one time O's trialist Ed Upson, added to Sam Foley's injury time strike gave the Glovers a comprehensive 3-0 victory.

Another League 1 winner in the south was Crawley Town, who knocked out Gillingham by the odd goal in five, with Scott Neilson netting the crucial winner four minutes from the end.

In the two all League 2 clashes, Southend United saw off AFC Wimbledon, whilst Aldershot Town defeated Exeter City on penalties after a scoreless draw.

The Southern Section is completed tonight when Swindon Town travel to Oxford United for a local derby.

Northern Section winners included Preston, Coventry and Notts County, and the second round is set to take place in the week commencing October 10.

The Southern Section will be comprised of Aldershot Town, Barnet, Brentford, Cheltenham Town, Colchester United, Crawley Town, Dagenham & Redbridge, Leyton Orient, Northampton Town, Oxford United or Swindon Town, Plymouth Argyle, Portsmouth, Southend United, Torquay United, Wycombe Wanderers and Yeovil Town.
