Goalscorer Gary discusses his goal, the mood in the changing room and the play-off chase
ORIENT left-back Gary Sawyer scored his first goal for the club on Saturday which set the O’s on their way to three points. Sawyer’s left footed strike in the 81st minute was his first goal since Boxing Day 2009 and the defender was pleased to play his part.
He said: “It was a bit of surprise scoring but it was just good to be in that sort of position and when it popped up I caught it well enough so it was nice to get a goal.
“I think over the course of the game we controlled it well and limited their chances, we had other chances and could have probably finished further ahead. One of our main things was to start fast and we did that well which set the tone and got them on the back foot.”
It was Sawyer’s 40th appearance of the season and despite being virtually ever present for the O’s for the majority of the campaign, he has been in and out of the side recently having picked up a couple of injuries.
“It’s good to be starting games again, obviously I started a lot at the start of the season and obviously it’s been a little bit frustrating with injuries so it’s just good to get myself fit and back playing,” he said.
“It shows the strength of the players that we have that we can change the back four so much and it still works.
“We have to look at the play-offs again, it’s something we have to aim for and if we can sneak in there then that’d be great. We’ve got a great spirit in the dressing room and a great bunch of lads, everyone is buzzing.”
