O's pair visit community project
The SCORE centre in Oliver Road is currently hosting the Summer@Score activity experience, a free programme of sporting fun and games for children aged 5 to 12 years with the staff of the Leyton Orient Community Sports Programme (LOCSP) entertaining 90 children each week throughout August.
Funded by the London Borough of Waltham Forest and as part of the Schools Open For Summer event, parents have been able to book their children onto the scheme, if not too late! “There has been a waiting list of about 30 names for each of the four weeks,” commented Philip Rudling, deputy Chief Executive at LOCSP, “so unfortunately some of our local children have had to miss out. But those who have attended so far have had a great time. We have plenty of staff on hand to lead the sessions and make sure the kids have a time to remember.”
Activities include; basketball, tennis, football, hockey, dodgeball and athletics as well as beach volleyball utilising the sand-court adjacent to the 3G football pitch, as used by the Italian Olympic team last summer!
Each week culminates with an award ceremony where all the children receive a certificate of attendance and some lucky one’s can win a medal or trophy in recognition of their efforts.
And the football club gets involved too with special guests like Theo the mascot or first team players turning up to chat to the children and give out match vouchers for forthcoming League games.
Captain Nathan Clarke and midfielder Jack Sherratt popped in last week and answered children’s questions before handing out vouchers for the Shrewsbury game.
Jack said: “It’s my first community appearance and I’ve really enjoyed it. The children seemed very excited to meet us and have match tickets. I’m certainly enjoying my time here at Orient and it’s been a great start; good to be part of.”
