Highams Park School girls team through to npower Football League Girls Cup finals
HIGHAMS PARK SCHOOL came through as winners of a recently organised knock-out tournament held at the Goals football centre in Chingford and will now represent Leyton Orient in the Area Finals of the npower Football League Girls Cup at Millwall FC.
Played over two days, Highams Park U13s battled their way past 11 other school teams beating worthy runners-up Leytonstone 3-0 in a tightly contested final. They now take on other local group winners representing AFC Wimbledon, Charlton, Crystal Palace, Dagenham & Redbridge, Gillingham, Southend and Millwall with the aim to progress to the Regional Finals that will take place at MK Dons in February.
If successful they will then reach the ultimate objective that is to play the National Final on the hallowed turf of Wembley Stadium prior to the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final in April!
Danielle Lewis, team manager, said: “The girls really enjoyed the tournament and are already buzzing about to going to Millwall. This is a great opportunity for them with a wonderful prize and we are going to do our best for the school and for Leyton Orient.”
Aside from the prestige of appearing at our National Stadium, the Girls Cup competition encourages youngsters to be active, healthy, and develop a keen sense of teamwork whilst enabling Football league clubs a chance to engage with local schools and pupils and promote their work within the local community.
Howard Gould, Club Liaison Officer, commented: “It was great to see all the local schools taking part and a good standard of play throughout. Girls football has come a long way over the past few years and to have a dedicated tournament with a chance to play at Wembley is tremendous. We wish Highams Park the very best of luck and will be supporting them all the way!”
