The Club were saddened to hear of the passing of former maintenance man Dave Waite last weekend.
More widely known at the Club as Dave the Baker, Dave worked for the O’s between 1992 and 2005. Born in Leytonstone, he came to the O’s as a child and found himself working for the club that he loved when he finished working for Allied Bakeries.
A popular member of staff, Dave spent his early years working on the pitch and then progressed to stadium maintenance with present staff member Matthew Bowden. There are a few stories of staff excursions which cannot be mentioned although a trip to Lords for an Essex cricket match stands out. Matthew recalls: "Me and Ada, the kitman, went up the shop at eight in the morning to get some bits for the day and on our return ten minutes later Dave was a little worse for wear as drinking Scotch had sent him a little tipsy! He then spent the journey throwing tomatoes at Ada, who was driving the minibus. In retaliation he drove over a speed hump rather quickly causing Dave to bite down hard on his lip, he then stopped throwing tomatoes!"
On reaching retirement age Dave went part-time but still did extra hours because of his love for the club. On leaving, which was an emotional time for himself and other staff, he said that working at the O’s was ‘the happiest time in his working life’
The Club’s sympathies are with Dave’s family at this time.
