NHS Rewards Coping Through Football

10 September 2013

Groundbreaking scheme continues to improve mental wellbeing

Coping Through Football is a transformational project that demonstrates how two sporting charities, namely the London Playing Fields Foundation and Leyton  Orient Community Sports Programme can work with the NHS to produce a sustainable recovery model approach to engage with and improve the wellbeing of young to mid-life adults who have enduring mental illness.

The project shows how sport can:

• help tackle stigma and discrimination
• can work together with the health sector on shared agendas to reduce inequalities
• be a tool for engagement with harder to reach groups
• assist in the recovery of those with mental ill health

Current football sessions run twice per week, on a Tuesday at the newly refurbished Douglas Eyre Centre in Coppermill Lane, Walthamstow and on Thursdays at the Score Centre, opposite Leyton Orient Football Club in Oliver Road, Leyton alongside regular tournaments and 11-a-side matches, (usually against their couterparts at Arsenal’s ‘Imagine Your Goals’ project) and quarterly educational workshops, the most recent of these being presented by Lyn Beaman, Smoking Cessation Specialist for Mental Health at the NHS Foundation Trust.

Howard Gould, LOCSP Development Coach leads the sessions and said, “The project has been established for over five years now and goes from strength to strength. There are passionate people driving the scheme along in the background always looking for ways to improve what’s on offer and the workshops are a great way of imparting interesting, educational and important information to the group.”

On completion of the workshop, all participants received an attendance certificate before a quick warm-up and into a game!

A further workshop, this time concentrating on healthy eating and nutrition, will take place later in the year.
