Outstanding response to the bucket collection with over £1,700 donated by supporters last SaturdayCollectors were around the stadium pre-match and at half time at the league fixture collecting money for the O’s Somme Memorial Fund.
Steve Jenkins, Deputy Chairman of the Leyton Orient Supporters Club, who organised the collection wanted to thank supporters and said, “On behalf of the committee of the O's Somme Memorial Fund, I wish to thank everyone who contributed to the collection held at the ground last Saturday.
The show of support was fantastic with the total figure for amount raised of £1709.06.
This will go a long way to assisting with the maintenance and up-keep of the Clapton Orient Memorial in Flers, as well as the various projects we have in mind to commemorate the O's service and sacrifice in the Great War.
A big thanks also to all the collectors and to those that carried the O's Somme banner onto the pitch before the game.”
Rob Noble, Leyton Orient FC’s Marketing and Partnerships Manager, commented, “The application for a collection this season was selected on the strength of it being the 100 year anniversary of the start of Great War and knowing how close the O’s Somme Memorial Fund is to many supporters hearts, as shown by numbers travelling on the recent summer trip to the Somme.”
“Saturday’s collection raised much more than usual match day collections and we’re absolutely delighted by the generosity shown by supporters in helping to remember those that played such an important and iconic part in Orient's history.”
