O's U18s skipper receives England call up for games against Croatia next month
ORIENT goalkeeper Charlie Grainger has been called up to the England U18s squad for their double header against Croatia next month.
The youngster had been on standby for the game against Belgium next week but has now been officially selected for the squad who will take on the Croatians on March 3 (7:30pm kick-off, venue TBC) and March 5 (St. George’s Park 2pm kick-off.)
Grainger has been involved with the first team on numerous occasions both this season and last, whilst he has also captained the O’s U18 side this season.
Academy Director Andy Edwards believes it’s a just reward for the ‘keeper who continues to excel in his development.
“I’m delighted for Charlie to get the call-up and he fully deserves it,” said Edwards. “He’s shown an excellent attitude and really put the work in on the training ground with Kevin Dearden and the other coaches. We’ve got high hopes for him and I’m sure that the international experience will be one he relishes and will make him a better player.
“It’s great for the academy as a whole too as not only does it give them something to aspire too but also that it sends a message out, that the Orient academy is a great choice for young players who wish to progress and become top class players.”
O’s boss Russell Slade was equally delighted for Grainger and said: “We’re really pleased for Charlie and it is a fantastic opportunity for him. I’m hope he grasps it with both hands.”
