Lee Southernwood, Andis Nikolau and Scott Kashket visited the new Leyton Orient Trust BTEC Level 1 students.
The O’s fitness coach, Lee Southernwood, took time out from his first team duties to give the new Leyton Orient Trust (LOT) BTEC Level 1 students an intense fitness session and taught them a range of warm up exercises and fitness skills. Two young O’s players, Andis Nikolau and Scott Kashket, also attended the session to surprise the students.
The two young footballers were invited along to give some inspiration and talk about their career along with some tips and advice as they are of a similar age to the students on the course.
Lee Southernwood coaches the first team players to ensure that the players are at full fitness. The aim of the afternoon was to pass on some of his expertise to the new students as they commenced their first weeks of learning. Lee said, “It was a pleasure to be working with the kids here; it’s good to pass on some of the tips and techniques that I use with the first team players.”
Junior Grittens, LOT tutor, said, “It was wonderful to see Scott and Andis helping the new students. They seem more enthusiastic already since meeting them and it should inspire them to work hard. Lee was also an inspiration to myself. I am going to use some of his tips to improve my own fitness!”
Lee started off the session with a military style warm up and the students then had to get themselves into groups. Each group was assigned Lee, Andis or Scott and they then had to design fitness tests for different sports including football, tennis, high-jumping and rugby. Each group then demonstrated their chosen fitness tests to the others allowing for discussion and Lee to comment, including mentioning the difference between a drill and a test.
After the fitness session the students had the opportunity to ask Lee, Andis and Scott questions about their career and fitness skills. The two young pros spoke about their fitness regimes and how they worked hard to gain their contracts with Orient.
Lee gave some added tips to the students and even to some of the coaches explaining the best exercises and stretches for the particular issues that they asked him about.
One of the students said, “The afternoon was a great opportunity for us to get to work with someone like Lee. It taught us a lot of important things and it helped us all get to know each other. It was inspiring to hear from Andis and Scott as they are a similar age to us.”
