Owusu at the double to help the O's to victoryIt was the perfect start for Leyton Orient U18s as they opened the season with an emphatic 4-1 win away at Gillingham.
The O’s went into the game in fine goal scoring form, as they had just dispatched Hadleigh United the week before 6-1 in their pre-season finale.
It didn’t take long for Orient to take the lead at the weekend when good play down the left from Charley Barker opened up the defence as he whipped in a cross which Christian Owusu was able to tap in from five yards.
Soon after though Gillingham were back level as Orient were caught out playing at the back too much, leading to a simple equaliser for the hosts. Nonetheless, the O’s recaptured the lead before the break, when a delightful corner from Sam Alderson found Myles Judd who thumped home a powerful header from eight yards.
The second half provided a much more positive outlook, as the O’s took complete control culminating with goalkeeper Sam Sargeant only having to make one routine save.
The more Orient pressed the more likely another goal was and Patrick Adamson came off the bench in the 65th minute and made an instant impact as he added a third, ghosting past the full back from another well placed set piece before finishing smartly.
Dan Happe was introduced 15 minutes before the end to help the O’s preserve the lead, but Owusu had other ideas as he added his second of the afternoon and putting the game well beyond doubt, before he was replaced late on by Tristan Abrahams.
The second half had many positive signs for this team and Academy Director Andy Edwards was extremely pleased with his team’s effort to overcome a couple of first-half mistakes before capitalising on the opportunities they created.
