2014 in review part 1/4

1 January 2015

We take a look back at the memorable 12 months that was 2014...

JANUARY

Orient started the year with heavy defeat in the FA Cup away at Yeovil Town but went on to win all four league matches throughout January. Orient started the month busy in the loan market as young strikers Jamar Loza and Shaquille Coulthirst joined on loan from Norwich and Tottenham respectively and Jamie Ness arrived from Stoke. Russell Slade brought in Chris Dagnall signed from Barnsley and the striker marked his debut in excellent style, coming off the bench to score twice and lead Orient to a 2-1 victory at Crewe. With Jamie Jones out injured, Eldin Jakupovic arrived on loan and quickly became a fan favourite, conceding only once before being recalled by parent club Hull after the O’s 2-0 win against Coventry. Deadline day was to be a relatively busy day for the club as Marvin Bartley signed permanently following a loan spell and goalkeeper Ben Alnwick joined from Championship outfit Charlton Athletic.

Ben Alnwick made his debut in the O’s 2-1 loss away at Rotherham before goalkeeper Shwan Jalal joined on loan from Bournemouth and played in successive home defeats against Peterborough and Bristol City. Fans were then delighted to see Eldin Jakupovic re-join on loan and the O’s drew 1-1 away at Preston North End before sealing back-to-back 2-0 home wins against Stevenage and Swindon. Orient were then boosted by news off the field as captain Nathan Clarke put pen-to-paper on a new deal with the club.

The O’s started the month brightly with a 2-1 home victory against Colchester before contesting a goalless draw at Notts County. Orient then claimed their first win at Port Vale in 57 years as Nathan Clarke scored his first goal for the club in a 2-0 win. The Sky cameras were then in town for the O’s sell-out top of the table clash against Brentford but it was the visitors who claimed the points with a narrow 1-0 win. Two consecutive draws away at Walsall and then at home to Oldham followed before Eldin Jakupovic was again recalled by Hull. Jamie Jones returned from a three-month absence to jump between the sticks in the O’s 1-0 home loss to Bradford and there was also great news for the academy as youth team goalkeeper Charlie Grainger made his England U18s debut against Croatia at St.George’s Park.
