McAnuff stars in Jamaica's Gold Cup draw

Midfielder finds the net in Gold Cup opener

Jobi McAnuff scored for Jamaica in the CONCACAF Gold Cup as they drew 2-2 with Costa Rica in California.

The match at the Stubhub Center, Carson, was Jamaica’s first Gold Cup game and McAnuff’s solo goal, the first for his country, rescued a point for the Reggae Boyz.

The O’s winger picked up the ball 40 yards from goal, weaving his way through a number of Costa Rica players before sliding the ball underneath Costa Rica goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado.

Garath McCleary had put Jamaica in front in the 13th minute before two quick goals from Roy Miller and David Ramirez set Costa Rica on the path to victory.

But McAnuff’s stunning individual goal has left the group wide open with the other match between El Salvador and Canada ending in a 0-0 draw.

He now has nine international appearances during his time at Orient which surpasses the record of 7 appearances held by Tony Grealish of Republic of Ireland and John Chiedoze and Tunji Banjo of Nigeria.

Jamaica’s final two group games are against Canada on July 11 and El Salvador on July 14.

It is very likely that McAnuff will break the appearance record over these next two games.
