'What's Your Goal?' programme proves a hit for the O's and Joe

15 June 2015

Joe benefits from Orient experience back in 2013

It was back on April 13, 2013 where Joe Newton got his first taste of what it was like to be a groundsman.

Newton was one of 11 youngsters who got the opportunity to take on a role within the club for a day when the then Football League sponsors Npower introduced a ‘What’s Your Goal?’ project – which enabled students to get a taste of what it would be like to work in a football club environment.

Joe filled the groundsman position as the O's won 2-0 against MK Dons on the day, and he worked alongside head groundsman Colin James.

Ever since then he had the bug to become a groundsman and after a couple of years building up his knowledge of the industry, he was made assistant groundsman at Orient in February.

And Joe is grateful for that experience just over two years ago, and it has certainly stood him in good stead.

“It’s just been a dream come true to be working here,” Joe told www.leytonorient.com.

“Having done my work experience at the club I was looking around for apprenticeships for some time and then Colin offered me this opportunity and I will be forever grateful. I love the job.

“Alongside my work here I go to Writtle College and study  horticulture and groundsmanship and that has been great. I am learning all the time from Colin who is always there for advice.

“Sometimes people think it’s just about cutting the lawn but there are other various aspects to it and since I came to the club I am learning all the time.”
