NEWS: Academy Coach Bentley hits the headlines

11 March 2015

'Goalkeeper' Bentley helps non-league side to victory

Leyton Orient Academy Coach Mark Bentley has hit the headlines in recent days with his exploits for non-league side Grays Athletic.

Bentley, who is also a player-manager at the Ryman Premier club, came off the bench during the second half with the Blues trailing 2-0 against Hampton & Richmond on March 4.

The 37-year-old scored the goal to level things up at 2-2 in the 72nd minute, before they saw goalkeeper Conor Gough sent off.

With no goalkeeper on the bench, Bentley donned the gloves and soon after, they conceded a penalty. But the O’s academy coach, who usually plays in midfield, managed to save the effort.

And to round it all off, Grays player Joao Carlos went up the other end and netted a late winner as Bentley's side picked up a welcome three points.

See below for a video of Bentley's heroics.
