Ex-O launches Trust's Walking Football programme

6 October 2015

The Leyton Orient Walking Football Programme has now been launched, so there’s no need to hang up the boots just yet!

The game has been designed to generate more participation within the older generations, and while normal football rules apply, only walking is permitted, meaning the physical demands have been reduced so you can still play the game you love.

It’s a game that is becoming more popular with adverts appearing on TV and professional clubs using it to aid their passing and become more comfortable on the ball.

Ex Leyton Orient star Peter Kitchen was at the launch, and said: “It’s a great social event, if you love football then your mind always wants to play football even as your body isn't as capable anymore.”

The launch saw both men and women take to the pitch, and the game started very fast with players forgetting the ‘walking’ element, but by the second half everyone was managing to pass, dribble and shoot all while walking.

After the launch Peter Kitchen took part in a Q&A with the players that attended, talking about his time at Orient and how happy he was to be back. One player at the launch met Peter back in 1977 when offering to be his electrician, now 38 years later their friendship still holds strong and they were reunited at the launch of the programme.

At the end of the session players were given tickets to the home game against Wycombe Wanderers, a way to show our appreciation at their enthusiasm and support shown throughout the day. Many of the players have been following the club for many years and were thrilled with their tickets.

This pilot programme will run for six weeks, but after fantastic early interest, there are plans to continue beyond this as well as opening up an extra evening session to allow for more people to access the programme.

There is no need to book a place just turn up and play, bring all your friends along too! It’s £3 per week and takes place in the SCORE Centre in Leyton.  For further information please contact Health and Wellbeing Activator Phillip Smith via email: Phillip.smith@leytonorienttrust.org
