O's come out on top in CupGoals from Josh Koroma and Tristan Abrahams helped Leyton Orient U18’s to a solid 2-0 win over Northampton, and saw them progress to the next round of the Youth Alliance Cup.
With a few knocks being sustained early on in the season, Rian McLean was given a chance up front but it was Northampton who created the first few chances, though they failed to capitalise.
Orient began to find their stride and fresh off the back of a 4-0 league win over Stevenage the previous weekend, they broke the deadlock.
A well-worked corner routine just before the 10-minute mark saw Koroma unmarked on the edge of the box and once the ball was at his feet, he drilled a low powerful shot towards the bottom right corner, which at first appeared to be saved, but slipped through the arms of the Northampton goalkeeper.
It could have then been two within the next 15 minutes as Orient had chances through Myles Judd, McLean and Abrahams, with the latter having the best opportunity when he couldn’t tuck the ball home following a goalmouth scramble.
But they got their just rewards as Abrahams latched on to a wonderful cross from Henry Ochieng, which was just as wonderfully headed home and beyond the reach of the Cobblers goalkeeper as they went into the break 2-0 ahead.
Even though there were no more goals in the second half, Orient continued to pass it quickly and smoothly before any Northampton pressure could be sustained. Some good link-up play between McLean, Koroma and Ochieng created a great chance after some exuberant passing, but the effort was well saved.
Northampton created a couple of opportunities as the half went on, but goalkeeper Sam Sargeant stood tall, pulling off a couple of good saves. Christian Owusu and Charley Barker then came on for Tristan Abrahams and Henry Ochieng.
Sargeant went on to make two further great saves, but the O’s had done enough to pick up the victory and progress in the Cup.
