Goalkeeper set for England training camp

Orient goalkeeper Sam Sargeant couldn’t hide his delight when finding out the news of his call-up to the England Men’s Goalkeeping camp next week.

The 18-year-old will head to Warwick University on Monday for a two-day camp alongside other goalkeepers from across the country.

Sargeant follows in a long line of Orient goalkeepers to take part in training camps, with the likes of Charlie Grainger, Sam Roach and Arthur Janata all being selected in the past.

And the ‘keeper was extremely pleased when he first heard the news of his call-up.

“I was told just before training on Monday morning and got pulled over and they showed me the email which was sent through. It was a nice way to start the day,” Sargeant told leytonorient.com

“I couldn’t believe it at first. It has been a dream of mine for three years, since my days at Millwall and I always wanted to have that call-up and a chance to go to a camp.”

Sargeant has featured on the first team bench nine times this season, and the youngster was keen to praise the work of former goalkeeping coach Lee Harrison along with both Charlie Grainger and number one Alex Cisak.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed this season and this season is the big one as a second year scholar and hopefully I will get a positive decision at the end of the season,” he added.

“I have been very lucky to be coached by Lee Harrison this year. He has helped me develop into an better all-round keeper and I don’t think I would have had the joy of being in and around the first team and getting this chance to go to the camp if it wasn’t for him and what he has done for this past season.

“Everyone brings something different to the table and the goalkeeping union at Orient is very solid. We get on really well and have good banter at training and we all learn different things off of each other.”

Academy Director Andy Edwards was full of praise for the youngster, saying: “Sam’s call-up is a great reflection on the work this football club does.

“His attitude and application is second to none and it is an example to all players, not just goalkeepers. He puts in a lot of hard work on the training ground and it shows the progress he is making as a young goalkeeper.”
