NEWS: Weir named O's captain

22 July 2016

Midfielder appointed Orient skipper

Leyton Orient are pleased to confirm midfielder Robbie Weir will be the O’s first-team captain for the 2016-17 Sky Bet EFL League Two campaign.

The 27-year-old joined the O’s on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Burton Albion, where he played a part in back-to-back promotions for the Brewers.

Weir will be assisted by another summer arrival in the shape of Liam Kelly as vice-captain, while Nicky Hunt has been appointed as the O’s club captain.

On appointing Weir as skipper, O’s boss Andy Hessenthaler told leytonorient.com:  “We know what Robbie’s pedigree was like before he came to the club and we spoke to people regarding Robbie as a person, but once we got him into the building you could see what he would bring to the team.

“He’s an organiser and a talker, while he also demands the best from himself and the rest of his teammates. He has got all the attributes to be a good captain for the football club.

“The captain is your leader, but for me for us to achieve our goals this year we have got to have 11 leaders when they cross that white line. We’ve given the role to Robbie to lead the team but I am expecting a lot from every individual out there this season.”

Vice-captain Kelly was skipper during his time with Oldham Athletic, while Hunt has also performed the role at previous club Mansfield Town, and Hessenthaler believes the trio will form a good partnership both on and off the pitch.

“Everyone has got roles to play at the football club, both on and off the pitch. Liam is an experienced lad and he’s a good back up for Robbie, but with both of them on the pitch they are going to be good captains together.

“We have made Nicky club captain and again he has lots of experience. He will be perform a vital role both on and off the pitch. I think it is a good trio and I am looking forward to working with them over the course of the season.”

An interview with the new O’s skipper will be on Orient PlayerHD later this afternoon.
