How have Orient fared on the opening day of the season in the past?
This time tomorrow the O’s will know their full EFL Sky Bet League Two schedule and the countdown to the opening day will begin in earnest.
Our record in our first fixtures of the new campaign have been varied over the last 10 years with five wins and five defeats, but during that time have only opened the campaign at the Matchroom Stadium on three occasions.
A 2-1 victory back in the 2008-09 season saw Orient get off to a winning start as goals from JJ Melligan and an Adam Boyd penalty saw off Hereford United.
After that though, the O’s had to wait until 2014-15 season before facing another home encounter, and it saw them open up with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Chesterfield, as Darius Henderson pulled one back with seven minutes to go.
It was back-to-back opening home games as Orient hosted Barnet last term and a goal apiece from strikers Jay Simpson and Paul McCallum helped them pick up maximum points.
From seven away games over the 10-year spell, the O’s have picked up three wins, with the highlight being the 5-1 success in the 2013-14 season at Carlisle United as two goals from Dean Cox and one each for Kevin Lisbie, Scott Cuthbert and David Mooney.
Other success have come against Bristol Rovers in 2009-10 when Melligan netted once more, along with Jimmy Smith for a 2-1 win, while a certain Rickie Lambert netted for the Gas, and the other victory came at Southend United in 2007-08 when Sean Thornton and Adam Boyd were on target in another 2-1 triumph.
