Orient captain named +Sport move and learn programme ambassadorChildren at Stoneydown Park Primary School received a special visit last month to officially launch the new Kinder +Sport Move and Learn programme being run by Leyton Orient Trust this academic year.
The programme aims to work with Year 5 pupils to encourage them to take part in physical activity, while helping them to understand the importance of a balanced diet and an active lifestyle.
Over the course of six weeks, children from year 5 classes spend 45 minutes in the classroom learning about the body, nutrition and the importance of exercise, through participating in interactive activities.
The second half of the 90 minute session is dedicated to playing football, dodgeball or handball, with two weeks spent on each sport. Stoneydown Park Primary are one of the first schools to have the opportunity to take part in the programme and as part of the launch, pupils’ got the exciting opportunity to meet programme ambassador and Orient player Robbie Weir! Robbie was on hand to take part in a Q&A session with the pupils to see what they’ve learnt from the project so far, he also shared how he keeps himself in tip-top condition too.
After spending some time in the classroom he then got to see the physical activity element of the programme in action as the group took part in a dodgeball session.
+Sport move and learn programme ambassador Robbie Weir commented: "I’m extremely proud to be able to support such an important programme, it’s vital we educate children from a young age on a healthy diet and encourage an active lifestyle. It was great to meet the children at Stoneydown Park primary school today and hear lots about what the children have learnt so far!’
As well as being able to meet and chat with Robbie, the school were also given 60 free tickets for the recent match against Luton Town.
The project, funded by Ferrero is available to schools across the boroughs of Waltham Forest, Hackney and Tower Hamlets.
