FA YOUTH CUP REACTION: Barker - 'It was enjoyable to watch'

3 November 2016

Skipper pleased with progress O's are making this season

O’s skipper Charley Barker may be frustrated at watching on from the sidelines, but the midfielder was delighted with his team-mates performance in the 6-0 win at Southend United in the FA Youth Cup.

Barker has been out on the sidelines since picking up a pars stress fracture in the lower back in early September, but admitted the O’s were a joy to watch last night as goals from Tristan Abrahams (2), Sam Dalby (2), Josh Koroma and Ruel Sotiriou secured their passage into the next round.

“It was a very good game and all the boys played well. It was enjoyable to watch,” he told leytonorient.com.

“Everything that we have learnt right from the very start this summer to now is all coming out and tonight showed that.

“Once we got the first goal the nerves settled and we were able to build on that. The confidence was flowing and when we get into our rhythm we are very good side and we showed that in abundance.”

The win now stretches the young O’s unbeaten run to 14 games in league and cup, and Barker knows there is no room for complacency as they continue in the search for further improvement and development.

“We want to keep the run going as long as we can and see how far we can get in this competition especially,” he added.

“We are going well in the league and we have guys scoring goals left, right and centre. When we are in form we are almost unstoppable, but we just have to keep going and not get complacent and build on from there.”

The midfielder is pleased with how his recovery is going having worked with both first team physiotherapist Peter Webb and academy physiotherapist Josh Birtwistle, and hopes to be back involved sooner rather than later.

“I am about six weeks off the pace,” he remarked.  “I’m running soon so to get out would be good. It is frustrating for me but I am enjoying watching the boys put in performances like that and they are all doing really well.”
