O's boss looking for strong start at home to PompeyO’s boss Alberto Cavasin admits it will be a strong test of the squad’s credentials when they come up against Paul Cook’s Portsmouth tomorrow at the Matchroom Stadium.
Orient host Pompey looking to record their first win in five league games having picked up a point at Barnet last weekend in their first league goalless draw since March 2015.
The O’s lost out to Southend 1-0 in the Checkatrade Trophy in midweek, and despite the defeat, Cavasin feels there is plenty to build on given the encouraging performance.
“I thought Tuesday’s performance showed some encouraging signs and we had a good intensity throughout the match,” he told leytonorient.com.
“We played some good football at times and if we can continue to build on that over the coming weeks then we will get back to winning matches.”
Cavasin is eagerly anticipating his first home match in charge of the O’s following his appointment on Sunday as the new manager, but admits the tests don’t come much tougher than in the shape of promotion hopefuls Pompey.
“I cannot wait to experience my first home game and I have been looking forward to it ever since I arrived at the club,” he added. “I would like to thank the fans for their support on Tuesday at Southend and everyone at the club has made me feel very welcome from day one.
“I know they will be behind us and I hope they can help us through to what will be a positive result and performance.
“Portsmouth have a very good squad and having watched a number of their games we know we are in for a tough challenge, but it is one we feel we can overcome.”
The 60-year-old Italian is nearing the end of his first full week in charge of the O’s and so far he has been pleased with how things are shaping up on the training pitch.
“It has been a very busy and hectic first week, but I am enjoying every minute. The team have shown a good work ethic over these first few days and hopefully we can continue to build on the work put in,” he remarked.
“We have a strong squad here and it is about bringing out the best of the players on a matchday and with the type of football we are looking to play I hope we can achieve plenty of positive results.”
