REACTION: O's boss Cavasin on Southend defeat

5 October 2016

Positives for new manager despite defeat

New O’s boss Alberto Cavasin saw some positives from his side’s display despite the 1-0 Checkatrade Trophy loss to Southend United last night.

Marc-Antoine Fortune’s late strike was the difference between the two sides on the night, and while disappointed to lose his first game in charge, he was pleased with aspects of the O’s play.

“The intensity was good and I was pleased with how we pressed and tried to play the ball on the floor to ensure we were dangerous to the opponents and we did create some opportunities to score,” he told leytonorient.com

“We started the game very well and in the first 20 minutes we imposed our way of playing and made life difficult for Southend.

“Then we made a few mistakes defensively, and though we didn’t concede many chances, we were too deep at times.  In the second half we played better and we had two great chances to score."

Defender Tom Parkes came off with a nose injury which be assessed out over the next few days ahead of the Portsmouth, while Cavasin was pleased with the performances of substitutes Alan Dunne and Jens Janse.

“Parkes had a problem with his nose so we are going to check him over the next few days and with Massey it was always a planned change to give us the opportunity to look at Jens in that position,” he added.

Focus now switches to Cavasin’s opening home league game of the season when the O’s host Portsmouth at the Matchroom Stadium, and the Italian hopes to get off to a positive start in the league.

“From this moment we are now focussed on Portsmouth,” he said.  "I am excited for the first home game and hopefully we can get back to winning ways at the weekend."
